Stingrays Swim Team Parent Association Meeting
August 21, 2002

President, Donna Shattuck, called the August meeting to order at 5:35 PM. There were several families in attendance. New team member, Nikki Feola, was represented by her mother Meg.

Bonnie Germain gave an informal team financial update. The current balance of the Parent Association fund remains in the proximity of $900, including additional dues paid and recent expenditures. Bonnie reported that team swim-caps would be ordered and cost approximately $400-500. Due to the changing of team ownership the same amount of funds will not be available to have the same level of awards banquet as last year. Cost-effective options will be considered until the account builds with team growth.

Bonnie has offered to order 2003 Southern California Swim Guides at the discounted price of $2.50. Fifty will be ordered and offered on a first come, first serve basis.

The minutes of the July 24, 2002 were read and approved.

Brenda Varma passed out meet forms for the Santa Fe Springs ABC meet. Registration deadline for this meet is September 9, 2002. Since the Santa Fe Springs meet is a Spirit Meet, all team members are to be present. Even new team members were encouraged to attend, if only to swim one or two races. Any parent who is unable to attend was invited to contact any team parent for a ride to the meet for their child. It was explained that those who are new team members pending USSA registration is acceptable. Any child that is swimming in an event for the first time is to enter NT on their meet registration form.

The future meets the team will be participating in are as follows and will be posted on our website.

Downey 11/2 -11/3
Bellflower 12/13 - 12/14

Due to the low number of meets during the fall, a fundraising activity for the team was suggested for sometime in the fall.

Due to the lack of response to Coach Chooch's request for time forms to be turned in by all swimmers, the Award Point System has been delayed. Due to the amount of set-up and book keeping required, the system may not be re-initiated until January. All swimmers will be awarded points for practice attendance, improvement in personal times and goals, meet attendance and performance. Extra points can be given by individual coaches for hard work, leadership and sportsmen like conduct. Points will be kept annually and awards will be given on the basis of point merit and achievement. A reminder and second request for swimmer timesheets was brought to the attention of the parents. Additional sheets may be found in the file cabinet and are to be filled out with current times for all strokes and turned in for point system set up.

The Potluck Beach Party has been re-scheduled to Sunday, September 29th due to the number of families who participate in mid-September religious holidays. We will be meeting at Zuma Beach, lifeguard tower number to be determined. Time of the beach party is 11 - 4 PM. A public gathering permit will be obtained from the County to be in compliance with local laws. A potluck item sign up sheets will be posted starting at the next meeting.

WEBMASTER'S CORRECTION: THE BEACH PARTY LOCATION HAS BEEN CHANGED TO LEO CARRILLO STATE BEACH, TOWER #5, 10A.M. TO 5P.M. THIS IS A POTLUCK EVENT SO PLEASE SIGN UP AT THE POOL IN ADVANCE, TIME PERMITTING.

The team camping trip will be postponed to a later weekend due to the unavailability of campsites available Labor Day weekend. A date in October will be considered.

Due to the announcement of the Jewish holidays starting early this year, the December 1, 2002 date for the Holiday Awards Banquet was scrapped and the discussion was tabled for the September meeting.

Swim Depot owner Jean returned with swimsuits ordered. Hooded sweatshirts are now available in child sizes S, M & L, and adult sizes S - XL at the cost of $25. Parents are encouraged to order parkas prior to the winter swim season.

All parents were reminded not to leave swimmers waiting in the parking lot or pick-up late due to the safety factor. Please call another team member for rides and contact pool in case of an emergency. Please be aware that Fall/Winter parking permits are now required.

Following the recent meeting of the Friends of Pierce Pool, attended by Jim Warren and Brenda Varma, it was announced that this year's fundraiser would be a Swim-A-Thon on Sunday, October 6th. All swimmers will be asked to participate by collecting pledges for the number of laps they swim on that day. Swimmers are asked also to seek a flat donation. All funds are for the sole purpose of the Friends of the Family who actively support and help maintain the Pierce Pool. All other fundraisers will be for the team. Details of the event and pledge sign-up forms will be distributed at a later date. It was suggested that we have a guest speaker, donate caps or T-shirts to enhance the event.

It was also announced that a wall for Donors and Recognition Plaques, previously designed, will be mounted at the pool entrance in the near future. A plaque for Lane Sponsorship will also be erected.

The next meeting was slated for Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at 5:30 PM at the Pierce College Pool. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
